My very favorite Christmas book is an old copy of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas that I am in possession of. Every Christmas Eve, my sister and I would scramble up onto the couch, on either side of my dad, and he would read this book to us.

The fire would be crackling, the tree would be all glowy, and we would probably be in weird matching flannel nightgowns. (Not my dad) He would read to us until he got to the last word of a stanza, and whichever of us he pointed to would read that word with a giggle.

This version of The Night Before Christmas, illustrated by Gyo Fujikawa, was first published in 1961. I’ve linked to Amazon, where you can buy it (with a slightly different cover illustration.)

That’s a classic, but I love to check out Christmas picture books to see which we can add into our collection. I always mean to put them away until the next Christmas, but they inevitably stay out all year and are read as much as any other book. Even in July.

Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama - Hel-lo, blended families! This book celebrates the mixed Christmas/Hanukkah holiday this family celebrates as their background traditions blend and merge to create some pretty wonderful new traditions. the illustrations are quirky and modern, and set the tone for this creative family.

The Christmas Quiet Book - Oh, just look at those sweet little black noses on the animals on the cover. This book celebrates the quiet moments around Christmas. Don’t you just love that peaceful calm that comes with a beautiful evening snowfall?

Merry Christmas, Maisy- We’re big Maisy fans around here. My kids (and I) love Lucy Cousins’ bright, graphic style and the fun, funny characters that grace the pages of her books.

The Deep and Snowy Wood

The Deep and Snowy Wood (Christmas Picture Book) - This is a Kindle book. It’s only $1.99!

Christmas Wombat - From Jackie French and Bruce Whatley comes a Christmas book starring the fuzzy little Wombat from their previous books. Sweet illustrations, and I’m pleased to see a new species of animal starring in children’s books.

How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas? - This book is silly and really fun for younger kids- they’ll crack up over the dinosaurs’ excitement for Christmas because they will identify with it. Perhaps they’ve even acted like a few of these dinos recently…

What are your favorite holiday books? Classics? Modern favs?

The grinch! This year I will read “a Christmas carol” for the first time with my kids. I will also like to try the Christmas pageant.

We have the same illustrated version of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, love it! Definitely going to check out a few of your recommendations too. Love the blended family idea, the quiet book, and the Kindle pick!
